It’s ridiculous, I know, but I spend at least a few minutes a day concerned about Sandra Bullock and Jesse James. I just can’t seem to shake my Happily-Ever-After Syndrome.
Because of graduate training and a few addicted relatives and friends, I’m acquainted with addicts and their addictions more than I want to be. Jesse sounds like he’s got at least one.
I guess I do too … to People magazine.
Anyhow, an author whose book I read years ago made a case for our addictions being the gift that brings us to our knees, the “bottom” that helps us realize we need God’s grace. Otherwise, he says, we’d never know. For this reason, he concludes we all have addictions.
The author likened our addictions to Paul’s thorn in his flesh, the one God refused to remove. Instead, God told Paul in 2 Corinthians 12: 9, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”
I don’t want to digress into theological debates about cravings and compulsions, however, we can at least agree we need God’s grace. And that people do really dumb stuff when they’re not checking in frequently with God. Also, sometimes we do things we can’t explain because it seems something overtook us. Like comedian Flip Wilson said, “The devil made me do it.”
I think that happened to Jesse.
Of course, no one except him knows what really happened. I hate it for their kids, for America’s sweetheart, for a guy who had it all (well, almost), and for all of us who love a love story.
What addiction has brought you to grace?
WRite wHere I’m supposed to be – I’m learning the best place to find a love story isn’t People magazine.
I am loving all of your post. Just spent an hour reading them all….and subscribing!
